Evolution of Intermediate-Mass Black Hole X-Ray Binaries
نویسنده
چکیده
The majority of the ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in external galaxies are believed to be accreting black holes in binary systems; some of the black holes could be as massive as ∼ 100 − 1000M⊙. We have performed evolution calculations for intermediate-mass black hole X-ray binaries, assuming they are formed in dense star clusters via tidal capture. The results are compared with those for stellar-mass black holes X-ray binaries. We find that these two types of black holes may have similar companion stars and binary orbits if observed as ULXs. However, intermediate-mass black holes seem to be favored in explaining the most luminous ULXs. We also discuss the possibilities of transient behavior and beamed emission in the evolution of these binary systems. Subject headings: accretion, accretion disks binaries: close X-rays: binaries

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملClose Binary Interactions of Intermediate-mass Black Holes: Possible Ultra-luminous X-ray Sources?
While many observed ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs, LX ≥ 1039 erg s−1) could be extragalactic X-ray binaries (XRBs) emitting close to the Eddington limit, the highest-luminosity ULXs (LX > 3× 1039 erg s−1) exceed the isotropic Eddington luminosity for even high-stellar-mass accreting black hole XRBs. It has been suggested that these highest-luminosity ULXs may contain accreting intermediate...
متن کاملModels of Ultraluminous X-ray Sources with Intermediate-mass Black Holes
We have computed models for ultraluminous X-ray sources (“ULXs”) consisting of a black-hole accretor of intermediate mass (“IMBH”; e.g., ∼1000 M⊙) and a captured donor star. For each of four different sets of initial donor masses and orbital separations, we computed 30,000 binary evolution models using a full Henyey stellar evolution code. To our knowledge this is the first time that a populati...
متن کاملAspherical supernova explosions and formation of compact black hole low-mass X-ray binaries
It has been suggested that black-hole low-mass X-ray binaries (BHLMXBs) with short orbital periods may have evolved from BH binaries with an intermediate-mass secondary, but the donor star seems to always have higher effective temperatures than measured in BHLMXBs (Justham, Rappaport & Podsiadlowski 2006). Here we suggest that the secondary star is originally an intermediate-mass (∼ 2 − 5M⊙) st...
متن کاملModels for the Observable System Parameters of Ultraluminous X-ray Sources
We investigate the evolution of the properties of model populations of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs), consisting of a black-hole accretor in a binary with a donor star. We have computed models corresponding to three different populations of black-hole binaries, motivated by our previous studies. Two of the models invoke stellar-mass (∼ 10M ) black-hole binaries, generated with a binary pop...
